Title Effects of gas diffusion layer with double-faced microporous layer coating on the performance of a PEM fuel cell under low air humidity conditions

  • Abstract In this paper, we have considered the effect of cathode GDL with MPL coatings on both sides and determined the optimal MPL design parameters including PTFE loading, carbon loading, and type of carbon powder by measuring the variations of cell performance. The experiments have been performed under different humidification conditions to evaluate the influence of GDL with MPL coatings on both sides and determine the optimal MPL structure and composition. Results have shown that the optimal cell performance under low air humidity condition could be obtained when the MPL is made of Acetylene black with the loadings of carbon powder 1.2/0.3 mg/cm2 on the surfaces facing to the catalyst layer/gas flow channel, respectively. The best PTFE content is also found to be 20 wt-% in both sides of MPL. The results benefit the research of key techniques of PEM fuel cell and help the establishment of optimal design parameters of MPL for running PEM fuel cell without air humidification device.
