  • Abstract Two kinds of rod-like Schiff base mesogens with -C=N- or -N=C- linkage are doped with chiral additives S811 and ISO(6OBA)2 to induce the blue phase (BP). The fluorinated mesogens exhibit lower BP formation temperature than their corresponding non-fluorinated homologues when equal chiral dopant S811 is added. Notably, the BP range can be broadened to more 20 K when fluorinated Schiff base mesogens are blended with chiral dopant ISO(6OBA)2. However, no BP could be induced in the binary mixture composed of chiral dopant ISO(6OBA)2 and Schiff base mesogen I (-C=N) with hydroxyl group. For series III(-N=C-), BP emerges only when chiral dopant ISO(6OBA)2 is added into fluorinated Schiff base mesogens.
