Title Application of forcespinning technique for the fabrication of PEO and Nafion nanofibers

  • Abstract Nanofibers have many applications in a fuel cell system. The electrospinning method is the most widely used technique to produce nanofibers. However, it has many disadvantages like low productivity, low safety features, and high cost. This study uses the forcespinning technique to fabricate PEO (Polyethylene oxide) and Nafion/PEO nanofibers. A spinneret with high rotation speed produces centrifugal force to drive the polymer solution flowing through a nozzle to form nanofibers. The parameters considered in this work include the polymer concentration and the type of solvent used in the polymer solution. The physical properties of PEO and Nafion/PEO solutions including dynamic viscosity and surface tension were also measured and the resultant PEO and Nafion /PEO nanofibers were observed and analyzed by SEM images.
    Experimental results show that in the case with fixed rotation speed of 6000 rpm, collection distance of 15 cm, the mean diameter of PEO nanofiber fabricated by different solvents does not increase with increasing polymer concentration. The polymer solution must be prepared in accordance with the evaporation rate of the solvent to obtain the nanofibers successfully. For the case of PEO nanofibers, the optimal composition of solvent is water and ethanol mixed with mass ratio of 1: 2, and the polymer concentration is 5 wt%. The mean diameter of PEO nanofibers is 213 nm under such a condition. For the case of Nafion/PEO nanofibers, the optimal polymer concentration is 13 wt% with Nafion and PEO mixed with mass ratio of 98:2 and the solvent is a mixture of water and ethanol with mass ratio of 1:2. The mean fiber diameter is 498 nm at this condition. The present results show that the forcespinning technology is an efficient way to produce PEO and Nafion/PEO nanofibers
