There are four different QoS (Quality of Service) classes for UMTS：conversational class、streaming class、interactive class and background class. To meet the different service requirement, the QoS mechanisms provided in the cellular network have to be robust and capable of providing reasonable QoS resolution. Differentiated Services, or DiffServ, is an IP QoS architecture based on packet marking that allows packets to be prioritized according to user requirements. The DiffServ architecture provides QoS by dividing traffic into different classes, marking each packet with a code point that indicates its category, and scheduling packets accordingly.
In this thesis we simulate Best-Effort network and DiffServ network for four classes of UMTS traffic by NS-2 simulator and evaluate the performance of each service class. It shows that the adoption of DiffServ architecture can improve the QoS of network.
