Title The Field Emission Properties of Silica-coated MWCNTs

  • Abstract Novel field emission cathode, silica-coated MWCNTs, is demonstrated
    its material structures and field emission properties in this study. Used the
    sol-gel method, silica-coated multi-walled carbon nonatubes (MWCNTs)
    were synthesized with TEOS, the precursor of silica. The number of
    precursors is going to influence the thickness of silica coating layer. The
    amorphous silica structure was identified by XRD. By virtue of the low
    thermal conductivity of silica, the silica-coated MWCNTs present higher
    decayed temperature in the TGA diagram. On the basis of FTIR, it indicates
    the bonding of Si-O and Si-O-Si on the MWCNTs surface. Their
    morphologies that silica coated on the MWCNTs surface have proved
    uniform by means of SEM and HRTEM. The silica coating layer can
    decrease the turn-on voltages of field emission, but the silica coating layers
    are limited to 10 nm. In addition, when the silica coats on the MWCNTs
    surface completely, the field emission currents emitted from silica-coated
    MWCNTs are more stable than from uncoated MWCNTs
