Each array takes on an area of 0.24*0.24m2 which contains 256 elements etched on a 0.8mm thickness FR4 substrate. The gapped ring element is obtained by cutting a complete ring into two halves. On contrast to reflectarrays with complete ring elements, we found that co-polarization level of the two kinds of arrays is almost of the same level; however, it is apparent that cross polarization level can largely be reduced in favor to reflectarrays with gapped-ring elements. In experiments, reduction in cross polarization levels is around 11 dB.
In simulation, plane wave scattering fields of a single gapped-ring and a single complete ring element are compared. We found that scattering field for the gapped ring causes a difference-like pattern with a null field at the broadside angle. Therefore, cross polarization level can be reduced
