In the dynamic and uncertain environments of the 21st century, the niche of companies is to meet customer demands and respond quickly to the changing market requirements. Literature review find that mass customization and agile manufacturing can meet these requirements. Therefore, this study expects to test the impact of mass customization and agile manufacturing on firm’s competitive advantage.
This study develops a framework that describes the relationship among mass customization, agile manufacturing and competitive advantage. The framework then was tested by the empirical data collected by using a mailing questionnaire from 800 manufacturing firms, which sampled from top 1000 manufacturers in Taiwan reported by Business Weekly in 2005. Through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) of SPSS 12.0 for Windows and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using AMOS 5.0, this study empirically tests the fit of model and assesses path coefficients.
The empirical test results indicate that both agile manufacturing level and mass customization level has a positive impact on competitive advantage. Besides, the mass customization practices are positively related to mass customization level, and agile manufacturing practices are positively related to agile manufacturing level. Therefore, this study suggests that in order to increase competitive advantage, the implementation of agile manufacturing is more important than the implementation of mass customization to manufacturers.
