  • Abstract The term “core competences” emerged on the management science and coined by the advocators, Prahalad and Hamel, in the article Core Competence of the Corporation. In order to achieve excellent business performance, core competences is important but may be only one of its requirements. It should be integrated with management functions and business functions. TQM is a holistic management philosophy that strives for continuous improvement in all functions of an organization, and it can be achieved only if the total quality concept is utilized from the acquisition of resources to customer service after the sale. Thus, this study will discuss the impact of TQM and firm’s core competences on competitive advantage and business performance.
Using factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM), this study empirically test the hypothesized relationships based on the data collected from manufacturing firms in Taiwan. The results indicate that both core competence and TQM impact competitive advantage significantly, and competitive advantage impacts business performance significantly; but neither core competence nor TQM impact business performance directly. Therefore, to increase business performance, manufacturer should create core competences and implement TQM.
