  • Abstract This paper investigates two firms consider to launch the environment-oriented Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative or not respectively, and analyze the equilibrium outputs, the optimal environment tax and the social welfare under the different cases. Suppose there exist one domestic firm and one foreign firm which enter the domestic market through FDI. According to both firms consider to launch CSR initiative or not, we have four different possible situations. We found that when the firm unilateral launch the environment-oriented CSR initiative, it is unfavorable to its firm’s outputs and the levels of profit whereas it is favorable to the rival firm’s. When both firm don’t launch the environment-oriented CSR initiative, the levels of output is higher than both firm launch the environment-oriented CSR initiative. If the domestic firm unilateral launch the environment-oriented CSR initiative, then the government will set a higher environment tax, reach rent-shifting effect. In contrast, if the foreign firm unilateral launch the environment-oriented CSR initiative, the government will set a lower environment tax. Besides, when the foreign firm’s cost is relatively high, and the foreign firm unilateral launch the environment-oriented CSR initiative, the social welfare is in the highest level. However, if the domestic firm unilateral launches the environment-oriented CSR initiative, it will harm the social welfare.
