  • Abstract In this study, the critical speed of rotating orthotropic annular plates with nonuniform thickness is investigated based on thick plate theory. In order to solve the eigenvalue problem, Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed on the basis of mathematically complete polynomial functions. The dimensionless critical speed is evaluated for different values of radius ratio, thickness ratio, thickness parameter and orthotropic rigidity ratio. Numerical results show that increasing the values of clamping ratio and thickness parameter can effectively enhance the critical speed of the disk for lower order mode, whereas increasing the values of rigidity ratio increase the critical speed for higher order mode. It is also found that the effect of shear deformation and rotatory inertia on critical speed for a circumferentially stiffened plate is greater than that for a radially stiffened plate. And the effect is much more pronounced for lower order mode of vibration.
