This thesis demonstrates a new concept of reflectarray based on a quad-EMC patch as radiating element. The advantages of using the proposed radiating element are (1) bandwidth improvement (2) possibility of avoiding bends in stubs to reduce the cross polarization level (3) the phase adjustment is made at a sub-array level so that the number of phase shifters can be reduced.
Several prototypes have been designed, manufactured and tested. For example, in one of the design, a 30% 3-dB gain bandwidth can be achieved. The efficiency is around 25%. Generally speaking, the wide band operation of the proposed design is proved. The straight delay lines employed as the phase shifters employed here will logically be true to generate lower cross-polarization. However, the experimental observations show a frequency dependence on cross-polarization levels. At some frequencies, the cross polarization level is still high. The best achieved cross polarization level is around 25dB.
