Title Design and Study of Small PIFA Structures

  • Abstract This thesis consists of four antennas and a method, Wheeler Cap Method, for
    measuring the efficiency of antennas. All the proposed antennas are based on PIFA, and
    PIFA is a kind of transmission line antenna. As for the transmission line antenna, if the
    terminations of open-circuit end and short-circuit end are parallel, with suitable
    adjustment, the reactance can be cancelled, and only the pure resistance will left.
    Impedance matching is based on the concept. The characteristic of PIFA is that the
    parallel of open-circuit end and short-circuit end.
    The first two PIFAs are designed for embedding into tablet PCs or notebook
    computers, and the operating frequency is IEEE 802.11 a/b/g. In order to make
    proposed antennas can be used in different countries wideband performance is the target
    for designing. The third PIFA is designed for the ZigBee system, and the operating
    frequency is IEEE 802.1.5.4, 2.4 GHz band. The fourth PIFA is designed for the
    WiMAX, and the operating frequency is IEEE 802.16x, 2.5-2.7 GHz.
    As the devices for wireless communication is becoming smaller, the minimization
    of antenna is a trend. The efficiency of antenna may be sacrificed when antenna is small.
    Wheeler Cap Method is suitable for the experiment in laboratory. Measuring the
    efficiency of antenna is an important issue.
