Title THE STUDY OF SPR FIBER SENSORS BASED ON MULTI-LAYER STRUCTURE

  • Abstract The phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is widely applied to the biological and chemical sensing for characterizing and quantifying bio-molecular interactions. The traditional advantages of SPR detective method have high sensitive response, kinetic sensing in real-time, and label-free for biological applications. Optical fiber sensors possess the characteristics of small, low cost, and the same scheme on conventional SPR technique. It is worthy to study and investigate the optical fiber SPR sensor. In this thesis, a multi-layer micro-structure is introduced to the optical fiber sensor for the tiny changes of the refractive index and film thickness measurments. By analyzing the inreractions of bio-molecules, the optical fiber sensor use proposed are useful for drug screening applications, high throughput analysis, diseases diagnosis, and the research of nano-biotechnology.
      The concept of admittance locus for optical thin film design is applied to analyze the new multi-layer SPR fiber sensor for modulating the absorption in wavelength. Both the SPR fiber sensors with a dielectric thin film coated on the gold film, and the traditional single-layer gold film SPR fiber are carried out for DI water, alcohol, and glucose solutions detections, with the results of the SPR absorption in wavelength shifting from the original location of 600 nm-700 nm to 1037 nm-1141.4 nm, 1186.2 nm - 1301 nm, 1295.4 nm-1445.2 nm, 1410.2 nm-1571.2 nm, respectively, as the thickness of the TiO2 dielectric thin film has the value range from 1037 nm to 1571.2 nm. The SPR fiber sensors with a dielectric thin film coated on the gold film not only can enhance the sensitivity, but also can extent the measurements wavelength from visible light to the wavelength used in the optical fiber communications. In addition, the optical SPR fiber sensors we proposed will be applied is the measurements for different concentrations of alcohol and glucose solution with the sensitivity of up to 2.55 × 10-6 refractive index units.
