Title Etherification of Polyols from Rice Straw to Produce a New Oxygenate Additive for Diesels

  • Abstract Petroleum Oil is an essential energy in our lives; however, petroleum oil has been decreasing in recent years. Therefore, we need to develop biomass energy to replace fossil fuels. Taiwan is an agricultural country, and we have a lot of agricultural waste which in a valuable raw material. In this experiment, we translated cellulose and hemicellulose into polyols first, then the etherification reaction of polyols to obtain a new oxygenate additive for diesels.
       This experiment was divided into two parts. In the first part, we used Smith degradation method to do reaction of cellulose and hemicellulose hydrolysis and oxidation-reduction for decomposition and reduction reaction. By this method, we could get more polyols. There was a discussion of many reaction variables, we changed the reaction time, temperatures, and reactant concentrations. Also, the final products will be analyzed by HPLC with a calibration curve in order to count the amount of products. 1hour and 70 ℃ for 0.4M IO4 is the best reaction and HIO4 is better than NaIO4.
       In the second part of this experiment was etherification xylitol which was reacted by dimethyl sulfate and sodium hydroxide. The results show the reaction was carried out at the ratio of 1:5:2.5 mole of xylitol:NaOH:DMS and reaction time is 24 hours, the temperature is 70 ℃ and H2O / NaOH molar ratio of 0.43 had the best reaction condition.The etherification products mix with gasoline and diesel to obtain the products.
