  • Abstract The study is to develop a Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) system for Mechanical Drawing, a major course in the mechanical engineering department. The system is one of the attempts to develop a complete CAI system for all courses in the mechanical engineering department. The present study includes the following subjects: the theory of teaching materials, the theory of system design, system display, the theory of drawing, and learning and testing. It is hoped that the results of the study can be applied to the teaching in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Kuang-Wu Institute of Technology. The CAI system is expected to enhance the teaching quality. The next step will focus on the network technology, WWW and hyperlink, a very effective way in long-distance courses.

    Instruction program includes e-books, computer-assisted instruction, and e-mail.

    E-book mainly contains instruction materials, stored in CD in the form of text and image; learners can study in proper order by initializing the program code by VB program.
    2. Computer-Assisted Instruction:
    The instruction material is written in proper order according to the principle of instruction. The constructional learning approach is adopted to arrange the instruction material, from which the learning units are planned by vertical and lateral thinking. With different methods of learning, including theory, instruction, examination, and simulation, learners can study theoretic background and simulated examination repeatedly. If

    E-mail can provide a channel of discussion between learners and teacher.
    Software compiled by VB is evaluated by the Kolmogorov Smimov One Sample Test and students are interviewed by questionnaire for each course unit. The feedbacks are taken into account in software modification, which can be conducive to teaching.
