Title The effect of microstructure and the mechanical properties of AISI D2 tool steel by deep cryogenic treatment

  • Abstract The high alloy cold work tool steel AISI D2 has been used for
    specimens material to investigate the influence at cryogenic treatment on
    the wear resistance of the steel. The cutting tool specimens prepared by
    conventionally, sub-zero and cryogenically have been used for evaluation
    on the flank wear of the cutting tips by turning the hot rolled AISI 1045
    steel on the comparison bases.
    Further, TEM examination was used for investigating the
    microstructure change during cryogenic treatment. The experiment results
    evidenced that the cryogenic treatment improved the preferential
    precipitation of fine ε-carbides. The fine ε-carbide particles distributed
    uniformly in the matrix of martensite promoted the strength and
    toughness of the martensite matrix so as to increase the wear resistance of
    the tool steel.
