Ralstonia solanacearum is an aerobic non-sporing, Gram-negative, soil-born plant pathogenic bacterium to potato, tomato and green pepper. Ralstonia solanacearum is classified as one of the world's most important phytopathogenic bacteria due to its lethality, persistence, wide host range and broad geographic distribution. Although the pathogen causes major yield lost in the tropics and subtropics , it is currently a continuing threat in temperate climates. R. solanacearum usually enter the plant via a wound from root of a plant. After invading a susceptible host, R. solanacearum multiplies and moves systematically within the plant before bacterial wilt symptoms occur.
This purpose of this study was to investigate the growth of tomato on the soil that contains Ralstonia solanacearum and furthermore to observe the infection of the tomato. Both control and intervention group had five tomato plants. Observation was obtained after one month of planting. Symptoms with drooping petioles of the lower part of the plant and lateral roots arose on the stem were observed for the tomato grow on the soil contains Ralstonia solanacearum. Two months after the initiation, two plants growing on Ralstonia solanacearum died. The average height of tomato plants growing on Ralstonia solanacearum was 127cm, while the average height of the control group was 148cm. After four months, the infected tomato plants yielded 38 tomato fruits on average and each tomato weighed 4.9g on average. In comparison, each tomato plants in the control group yielded 35 tomato fruits on average and each weighed 8.2g.
