To answer the need for E1 HDLC IP packet monitoring and to reduce its cost, we tried to find a way to convert the E1 HDLC IP packets to the Ethernet IP packets, which can then be easily analyzed with software such as Wireshark or Ethernet protocol analyzers.
We implements three HDLC IP monitoring structures: E1 interface capturer, router-based converter, and embedded Linux converter. Each approach was tested in our experimental network, which includes an E1 HDLC router connecting two Ethernet IP network segments. For each approach, we discussed in details the setup process, testing procedures, and the experimental results. In the experiment, we discovered the effect of ARP on router-based converter, and we proposed a solution. We also confirmed the viability of embedded Linux converter, which achieves the goals of cost-reduction and packet monitoring. Finally we provide an overall analysis of three approaches for future study of E1 HDLC IP packet monitoring.
