In the global transportation development trend of public electric vehicles, the progress of technology will influence people’s ways of living, change the responsibilities of drivers in the future, and alter the users’ needs. An issue worthy of exploration for designers is how different groups of people use their time inside the vehicles impact interior design.
Based on the views from literature review, this study will investigate the needs for interior design from different groups of people, if users from different social status have different needs and interactive activities from those of their peers, and further discover the needs and expectations on automobile interior design of users from different groups.
The purposes of this study include: (1) investigating consumers’ expectations on automobile interior and spacious design in terms of future trend of public sharing; (2) investigating different group of users’ evaluation and its difference on the various designs, arrangement, and interior design of high automation of concept vehicle, investigating what users wish to do in different arrangement and interior designs, the needs for interactive activities, and the functions and equipments wish to be added, then further conclude design principles; (3) designing two sets of interior designs based on the concluded design principles and having them evaluated by users to see if the interior designs meet their needs.
Based on the interview results of design concept evaluation, the interior design guidelines of highly automated vehicles for public sharing are as follows. First, face to face interactions, i.e. facial expressions could be observed in real time, play an important role in future interior design. Second, the video and audio facilities for entertainment needs to be enriched. Third, comfort and adaptive spaces and atmospheres for rest and leisure will be the key component of user experiences.
