  • Abstract This study has used cathodic arc deposition system to coat TiCuN films on SUS 304 stainless steel with the different meshes of filter for exploring the effect of filter on Cu content and characteristics of the TiCuN films. Coating microstructure and properties such as roughness, adhesion, hardness, and elastic modulus were analyzed. Polarization tests, wear test, and antibacterial test of the coated and uncoated specimens were all conducted for exploring the coating effect on the corrosion, abrasion, and antibacterial properties of SUS 304 stainless steel.
    The experimental results showed that the use of filter could reduce the thickness and roughness of the TiCuN films. All the films almost had the similar adhesion strength (ASQ) about the ranging of HF1-HF2. When the filter had smaller mesh, the Cu content was tinier content in the TiCuN films and the films showed an amorphous morphology. Such a result, the film had the highest values in hardness (25.4GPa), elastic modulus (282.5GPa), and H/E among all the coatings. Consequently, the TiCuN coatings could effectively improve the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and antibacterial resistance of SUS 304 stainless steel.
