Title The Attractiveness Factors of the Independent Bookstore in Taiwan

  • Abstract With the decline of the publishing industry in recent years, physical bookstores have been closing down one after another over the last decade. Independent bookstores are no exception, either. An independent bookstore is aimed at providing a culturally diversified space for readers, yet can such a bookstore persist any longer for the benefit of the reader during difficult economic times? Therefore, it is our hope that the current study may provide a useful reference for the government in formulating policies regarding “supporting independent bookstores” in the future. This might in turn help to clarify the planning of an independent bookstore and help the owners (and prospective owners) of such bookstores better understand the trends and future directions at the same time.
      Firstly, a literature survey was conducted to collect and analyze related materials, this study attempts to pinpoint the constructs of an independent bookstore and discover three main constructs: (1) core values (2) the creation of style (3) target readers. Then we conducted interviews with five independent newly founded bookstores that were subsidized by the Ministry of Culture (in 2012) and are located in northern Taiwan. Find out the attractiveness factors of Independent bookstore with the application of Evaluation Grid Method from Miryoku Engineering. The study shows there are four main original attractiveness factors, “Create ambience,” “Provide diverse services,” “The core idea of management” and “Interaction with operators” along with fifteen specific conditions charismatic factors and eighteen abstract reason charismatic factors. Through a questionnaire designed based on these factors, we obtain ninety seven samples for further analysis.
      Create ambience, Provide diverse services, the core idea of management, and Interaction with operators are highly agreed by respondents. In concrete attractiveness factors, the operator is to emphasize reading promotion, generating interaction between each other, and consumers more emphasis on books. Operators feel that the focus on the soul level, and consumers more feel relaxed and fun. Based on the findings, this research proposes several suggestions for operators of independent Bookstore Respectively, for consideration of space configuration, promotional practices and consideration of composite catering.
