In 2008, 97.70 percent of Taiwan enterprises are SMEs. Geographically, Taiwan is an island with relatively small hinterland and a small market for domestic consumption. It is really difficult that all enterprises could survive and grow without export for a long time. In addition, with the internationalization trend, SMEs are facing the competition not only from large companies in Taiwan, but also from foreign enterprises. In order to pursue revenue and profit growths, SMEs is bound to export. According to the White Paper on Small and Medium Enterprises in Taiwan, 2009, the export of small and medium manufacturers accounted for about 70 percent of export value of total SMEs. Therefore, this study focuses on export manufacturing in SMEs and identifies the key success factors. After literature review, this study concludes six dimensions of success factors, which are marketing, design, purchasing, production, selling, and managers’ characteristics.
The subjects of this study are export manufacturers that have continued to export for 5 years and meet two additional conditions: 1. Export amount accounts for 20% of total sales in 2009. 2. In the past 5 years, at least two years (including), manufactures have the positive EBT (earnings before tax). This study was conducted by a questionnaire, and 105 usable questionnaires were received. Through analysis by AMOS, this study finds out that production capability and manager’s characteristic are key success factors of export among Taiwan’s SMEs and have a positively impact on export performance.
