Title A Study on Design Factors of Skinny Keyboard

  • Abstract The function of today’s tablet is not only to receive information, but also to send out information by inputting texts that are seen in emails and messages. Although tablets with external skinny keyboard exist in the market, these keyboards usually have poor inputting feedback and are uncomfortable to use. This research is aimed to study the design factors that are involed when designing the skinny keyboards, and to explore how inputting feedback can be enhanced by improving the haptic feedback on skinny keyboards. The variables of keyboard controlling are the shape of the buttons (round, square and L shape), the thickness of the buttons (plane, 3mm and 6mm), and the load forces (35±10g, 60±10g, 85±10g). The research participants were asked to conduct the task of English typing. They were divided into two groups based on if they could type more than 30 words/min in English. Owing to more control variables and levels, and considering the experiment time and the experimental prototype, the fractional factorial design is adopted to proceed the experiments design. And the evaluative criterion is adopting objective evaluation (wrong words, spent time), subjective questionnaire and the NASA-TLX to proceed the analysis. The measurement result uses MANOVA to analyze its significance, and adopts the Taguchi Method’s S/N signal to noise ratio to analyze every factor’s optimum standard. The result shows that, the slower typing speed subject group is mainly the visual feedback button, and no consistent trend in measurement result. The faster typing speed subject group has obvious consistency. The overall results obtain an objective assessment: L shape, 3mm thick, key load 60±10g, and a subjective assessment: L shape, 3mm thick, 35±10g, two kinds of performance degree and higher satisfaction keyboard. The learning curve also shows that both keyboards can overtake the input performance of physical keyboard. The result of this research will be helpful for the development of skinny keyboard design.
