Title Transesterification of Soybean Oil to Biodiesel Using Immobilized Candida Antarctica Lipase

  • Abstract The transesterification of soybean oil and methanol was investigated with a cheap, commercially immobilized enzyme from candida antarctica in an incubator shaker. The optimum conditions of the transesterification in batch system are as follows: 5 wt% lipase based on oil weight; oil/methanol molar ratio 1:4; 1 wt% water; reaction temperature at 40℃; vibration speed at 200 rpm; reaction time for 72 h, and the maximum methyl esters yield is 88%. The yield is 58% after being repeatedly used for 6 times when tert-butanol is adopted to wash lipase. The optimum conditions of the transesterification in a glass-made fluidized bed at room temperature are as follows: 5% lipase based on oil weight; oil/methanol molar ratio 1:3; flow rate at 200 ml/min; reaction time for 72 h, and the maximum methyl esters yield is 63%. The results show that the transesterification reaction can be processed in mass production at room temperature.
