  • Abstract This research is to study the characteristics of aluminum electrolytic capacitor fabricated with conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as solid electrolyte. PEDOT has high conductivity, thermal stability, high frequency characteristics, and long life time. Therefore PEDOT solid electrolytic capacitors possess huge value of development and commercialization in the future.
We utilize chemical polymerization to make PEDOT film deposited on the surface of element to obtain the capacitors with high frequency characteristics. The specifications of capacitors can reach less than 12% of dissipation factor and smaller than 250 mΩ of the high frequency impedance.
Owing to the EDOT polymerization reaction is so fast that just only one step of polymer the characteristics of capacitor study as function of the ratio of EDOT/methanol and the amount of retard agent (tetrahydrofuran) in oxidant (ferric toluene sulfonate solution) to find the optimal experiment ratio. It is found that the best performance of capacitor is weight ratio of EDOT/methanol is 1:3 and 2 wt% of retard agent in oxidant.
Finally, the improvement of characteristics of PEDOT electrolyte capacitors can be obtained by added few monomer in retard agent solution during polymerization. That impedance characteristic of PEDOT electrolyte capacitors is better than that of the liquid capacitor and for its shows thermal stability characteristics.
