In Investigation I, 214 color samples were displayed one by one in front of six participants, who are good at Taiwanese language. They were asked to give each color sample a color name. In Investigation II, all 224 color samples were presented to 33 participants. They were asked to point out three color samples to fit the color name.
The results showed that the color names used in Taiwanese language can be classified into four groups, basic color name, elaborate color name, basic-basic combination and basic-elaborate combination.
It was found that basic color names contain 12 color names, including oo sik (black color), peh sik (white color), phu sik (gray color), ang sik (red color), na sik (blue color), ng sik (yellow color), lik sik (green color), tshenn sik (green color), tsi sik (purple color), hun ang sik (pink color), Kim sik (gold color) and gin sik (silver color).
Elaborate color names contain 20 color names, including tshi a sik (tree color), tshau a sik (grass color), tshau t a sik (meadow color), kiam tshai sik (pickle color), tshai sik (vegetable color), kun jin a sik (soldier color), thinn sik (sky color), sui sik (water color), ke nng sik (chicken eggs color), ah nng sik (duck egg color), phue hu sik (skin color), bah sik (meat color), ka pi sik (coffee color), tsng a sik (brick color), thoo sik (soil color), kio a sik (aubergine color), bi sik (rice color), kam a sik (orange color) , hue hu (ash color) and peh phoo peh phoo (near white color).
Basic-basic combinations were found to consist of two basic color names, including tshenn na sik (greenish blue color) , tshenn ng sik (greenish yellow color) , tshenn lik sik (bluish green color) , oo lik sik (blackish green color) , kim ng sik (golden yellow color) and tsi ang sik (purplish red color)。
Basic-elaborate combination were found to consisit of one basic color name and one elaborate color name. This includes kim ku lik (beetle green color) , tshau tshenn sik (grass green color) , tshau lik sik (grass green color) , tsui ang sik (water red color) , tsui na sik (water blue color) , oo tāu na (black bean blue color) , hai na sik (sea blue color) , tho ang sik (peach red color) , bi ng sik (rice yellow color) and ah nng tshenn (duck egg green color)。
Finally, each color names identified in Taiwanese language was mapped in CIELab color space.
