  • Abstract This thesis proposes a sensorless drive system for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The drive system is composed of rotor angular position estimator based on sliding-mode observer (SMO) and adaptive backstepping (AB) speed controller with adaptive law for system parameter variation. After starting the PMSM, the rotor angular position and speed is estimated by above-mentioned estimator. By using the estimated rotor angular speed, AB speed controller enables the rotor speed to follow the command speed. Moreover, AB speed controller can estimate and modify the system parameters to obtain the better dynamic efficiency and system robustness by means of the adaptive laws. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed drive system has excellent transient response and acceptable system robustness in different operating speed.
