  • Abstract Even though the charge of phone call nowadays is cheaper than before, the cost of a length long distance or international call is still pretty high. With the introduction of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, it is possible to reduce these kind of communication cost dramatically. Therefore, many companies are moving their phone system to VoIP system to reduce the communication cost. But if one of the calling parties does not have the VoIP environment, the call still needs to go through the traditional phone service provider.
    An VoIP gateway is an equipment that can convert the analog phone call to digital form and vice versa. In the caller side, the VoIP gateway converts the analog phone call sugnal to digital form and transmits it through the network to the VoIP gateway of the callee side. The receiving VoIP gateway then converts the digital form data back to the analog phone signal and sends it to the callee. This operation can significantly reduce the cost of the long-distance communication.
    The cost of commercial VoIP gateway is probably not affordable by most of the small to medium size enterprises. In this research, we proposed a low-cost alternative that integrates the IPPBX (Internet Protocol Private Brance eXchange) and the VoIP gateway using the public domain software. The experimental results show that using our proposed system is both side of a company and its branch office, we can have a very flexible dialing plan and low cost communication for internal and/or external phone calls.
