Title Applying the Corresponding Association between Life Goods and Colors to Assist Elderly’s Memory

  • Abstract The physical and mental functions of the elderly gradually deteriorate with age, thus causing many inconveniences in life such as difficulty finding where commodities are placed. For instance, the elderly may always try so hard to search for some important commodities that can be caused by their worse memory. It could even make elderly people feel very frustrated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of using color association training to enhance the effectiveness of the elderly's memory regarding the placement of objects so that they are better able to locate the objects they are searching for. Based on the aforementioned aim, this study was divided into two major sections. The first section conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate the various of commodities to associated the corresponding colors for the elderly use. Then, all the colors were applied to different containers, which were used as the test samples for the experiment in the second section. The second section, which consisted of three stages, included the experiment of association training and testing between the categories of the commodities and containers in various color for the elderly. The first stage consisted of first allowing the elderly to placed the categories of the commodities intuitively onto the container of the color they associate each object with to verify the color association results obtained from the questionnaire results in the first section. In the second and third stages, training and testing on t the categories of the commodities and color associations were conducted. Lastly, the accuracy rate and time spent before and after training were compared to see if there were any differences in the results. The research results showed the following: 1) The elderly are affected by the gradual degeneration of their sight; their ability to identify colors becomes reduced, and most of the colors they choose corresponding to commodities are bright and colorful (in particular, red and pink). This finding conforms to the preferred colors of the elderly mentioned in related literature. On the contrary, dark colors such as black have lower brightness with little perceptible difference between hues, so the elderly are less likely to identify these colors and would therefore not choose them. 2) Most of the elderly showed significant improvement in accuracy rate (increased by 9.13%) and time spent (decreased by 20.32 seconds) after color association training. This proves that the color association method does in fact enhance the elderly memory of where commodities are placed. This result can serve as a reference for future planning of the colors of containers used in residences for the elderly. 3) The educational levels of the elderly did not affect their ability to memorize places where commodities were placed; that is, the educational levels and memories of the elderly were not correlated.
