In general, the application of recycled materials focuses on materials that are easy to recycle. Materials that are difficult to recycle are rarely used. Therefore, this study focused on the recycled scrap cement materials which are difficult to recycle currently and its application in product design.
This study explored the material properties and possible applications of scrap cement materials through data integration and interviews with experts. In addition, this study extended the results from example analysis to product design process, providing suggestions that can be used as references when one attempts to use scrap cement in design.
The results of this study showed: 1.If the material's properties can be expressed effectively in design, it would generate different images and perceived values. 2. The lighting performance of the cement surface texture can manifest cement's material properties and this can be used in the lighting design. 3. When designers work on designs that are related to scrap materials, they could try to cooperate with scrap recycling vendors to further promote the feasibility of scrap recycling. 4. Material utilization should not confine to recycled materials. If appropriate, new materials should be used to combine with recycled materials to create new products. Only so, the product strength can be enhanced and the optimal design of the composite materials can be achieved.
Through actual experimental designing, this study thinks that as long as the material properties and the idea which the design tries to express are handled properly, all types of material can be used in lighting design. This kind of design method can also be extensively used in the lighting design using scrap materials, creating a new possibility in scrap material management.
