Gem authentication instruments most commonly use a magnifyier and tweezers. When light is insufficient, a pen light is used. Operation of these three authentication instruments varys from person to person due to the cognition and knowledge for different jewelry. If the operation time lasts too long, it can cause eyestrain, neck discomfort, and is prone to local burden of musculoskeletal system. Besidess, if consumer does not remember carrying the three authentication instruments together, it will be inconvenience in observing the jewelry.
Based on the "user-centered design" concept, this study is intended to figure out a set of design principles for portable gem authentication instrument, and validicate it. The study is divided into: questionnaires, anthropometry, principles of design, product design, model making, validation experiment. Some participants had shown incorrect postures, and felt the operation with three authentication instruments was somewhat complicated. More than often, the observed gem might slip down. Therefore, they proposed that the traditional instruments (the magnifier, tweezers and pen lights) should be combined into a single instrument. Based on these results and literature review, a set of design principles was figured out, and a model was made accordingly. 9 mals and 23 fe males were recruited for the validation experiment. Two independent variables were authentication instrument (traditional instrument, and new designed instrument), and gem (real, and false), and a blocking factor was subject, Subjective assessment and operation time are the dependent variable. The results of analysis showed that traditional instruments and the new design instrument have a significant difference. The analysis of LSD showed that the authentication time and operation time of the new designed instrument was significantly lower than that of the traditional instrument, so were the operation postures.
This study showed that the new designed authentication instrument is better than the traditional instrument in terms of usability, and appearance. The process adopted and design principles figured out in the study should be a good reference for research and development of new products in the industry.
