Title A Study on the Product Design for a Bicycle Stereo

  • Abstract Bicycle stereo is a device for providing music to the bicyclist. It is similar to MP3, except broadcasting music through speakers instead of earphones.However, generally, the interface of marketed bicycle stereos dosen’t fit the cyclist’s needs, yet meet the operation situation.
    The main purpose of this paper is to figure out proper design principles for the bicycle stereo, and design a bicycle stereo product which is suitable for cyclist’s needs and for operation during cycling. Status analysis and questionnaire survey were used to find out the status of bicycle stereo product and the needs of cyclist. The first stage of experiment was satisfaction experiment in witch a simulated bicycle was adapted to test three different bicycle stereo products by 32 subjects. Then based on to the results plus anthropometry and literature review, a set of design principles was addressed. A bicycle stereo with improved interface was made, and was used in the validated experiment.
    The results has shown that the satisfaction of interface improved bicycle stereo reached significance level at all tasks except the confirming of the button pressing during song switching and volume controlling task. The operation time was also reduced significantly. Based on design principles such as button should be mounted on the left side and placed inside the range which can be operated with hand on the grip; the distance between the button and the edge of grip is 5.5 cm or less; all of the buttons should be located at an area of 46.6 cm2 ; the dimension of the button is 1.81 cm2 . A pair of twin speakers, head light and LCD screen are also suggested.
