  • Abstract The human figure with skin colors is always the focus of the people watching images displayed on the display devices like LCDs. Skin colors play an important role in assessing the visual quality of the image containing human figures. Unfortunately, the perception of skin colors is always influenced by the simultaneous color contrast effect. This paper presents a color correction scheme for reducing the shift in skin color perception to the minimum that the human skin colors against the background of any colors can be perceived as those against the background color in mid-gray. This suggestion is considered no effect on the human perception of colors. The skin color is corrected pixel-wise by modifying the associated gamma parameters of the GOG models that characterizes the EOTF of those three primary color channels of the display device. The approach adopted in this research has two phases. The first phase is to analyze the perception shift of some representative skin colors as being surrounded by a set of pre-selected background colors. With the use of paired comparison and 3-D logarithmic search through the 3-dimensional gamma space of RGB, The shift in perception is quantified by the differences between the gamma parameters of the skin colors surrounded by the mid-gray color and the gamma parameters of the skin color surrounded by a specified background color, also identified both skin colors have the same appearance to be given. According to the results of the analysis obtained from the first phase, the differential gammas (relative to 2.2 in this paper) for correcting any arbitrary skin color against any arbitrary background color are estimated by a mathematical model that takes into account the local properties of the background colors around the skin color to be corrected.
