  • Abstract As time goes by, the idea of “Design” has been aware of by Taiwanese industry. The benefit of incorporating design with business has been seen. When organizations started to collaborate with design companies, there were a lot of communication issues as most of the organizations had very limited background on design.
This study targeted the communication differences between control group- both instructor and drawer had design background, and experimental group- the drawer had design background but the instructor didn’t. We assigned each group a picture as a task. The instructor received the image from us and had to direct the drawer to complete an exact same picture based on his/her instruction and their communication.
Think-aloud was the main method of the test in this study. We recorded the communication process of each group, transformed the video data to the text data, categorized the data and ran protocol analysis as well as the statistic tests. The first part of study analyzed whether there was difference between control group and experimental group. The result found that it is positive- the difference existed.
In the second part of the study, we broke down the coding, analyzed the interaction between the instructor and the drawer, re-categorized coding to be more specific, and built a new model in order to specify what exact the communication differences were between control group and experimental group.
After ranking all the pictures from the drawer based on how much they look alike to the task we assigned, the top ranking pictures showed that the instructions of drawing process which given by the instructors in experimental group had certain patterns. However, the instructions of drawing process which given by the instructors in control group are variant.
The study also proposed that the instructors of the control group tended to review the picture frequently before it got done. The more frequently they reviewed the half-done picture, the more similar the picture looked to the task. Besides, the focus group analysis data indicated that the communication in control group is more effective than the communication in experimental group.
