Title APPLICATION OF CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINES FOR TOPICAL HEALTH CARE IN SMALL ANIMALS

  • Abstract Due to the declining birthrate and increasing aging population in Taiwan, the number of companion animals was growing and pet market was increasingly promising. With the rise of complementary and alternative medicine, herbal medicine was gradually applied to animals. In addition to evaluate the antioxidant activity of Chinese herbal products, this study also explored the topical application of Chinese herbal products for pet health care. The results found that out of three different products, Product A showed the best in antioxidant activity, including reducing power as well as ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging abilities; Product C come after that, while Product B performed the worst. Similar phenomenon was also found in total phenolic and flavonoid contents of these Chinese herbal products. It was also found that Chinese herbal product B topically applied on six cases of bird in veterinary clinics help the healing of wound well. While product C applied on six cases of dog and one case of cat, respectively, for eczema skin care, could reduce scratches of small animals and facilitate the recovery of the skin.
