||The utilization of four high-content oligosaccharides including galacto-olisaccharides(GOS), isomalto-oligosaccharides(IMO), fructo-oligosaccarides(FOS), and xylo-oligosaccharides(XOS) by Bifidobacterium catenulatum, B. longum, B. lactis(two strains), B. infantis, B. breve(two strains), B. bifidum, B. adolescentis, and Lactobacillus. plantarum, L. reuteri, L. rhamnosus (two strains), L.bulgaricus, L. acidophilus (two strains), Streptococcus thermophilus were investigated in this study. HPLC analysis and cell densities by OD600nm during the growth of 17 probiotic bacteria showed difference in consumption of the four oligosaccharides. Of the studies, the least consumed oligosaccharides by the test probiotics was XOS. Only B. adolescentis, B. lactis and B.catenulatum were able to utilize XOS. L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. reuteri, B. infantis, B. lactis, B. breve, B. catenulatum, B. longum could utilize GOS. FOS can be utilized by the following probiotics: B. adolescentis, B. breve, B. longum, B. infantis, B. catenulatum, L. acidophilus, L. plantarum. IMO can be utilized by B. lactis, B. breve, B. catenulatum, B. longum, B. infantis, L. reuteri. Among all the test probiotic bacteria, only L. reuteri could utilize GOS and IMO to produce butyric acid which has benefits in the large intestine.
