Therefore, the interface to home appliances emerges different patterns of operation. This study will discuss different interfaces to various washing machines and observing how users operate and suggesting the optimal configuration for users to have more intuitive and smooth operation mode.
The purpose of this study is (1) four interfaces simulated with washing machines through research on the operational interface of household appliances; (2) simulating operational interfaces by different groups of subjects, to discussed the operational performance from the experimental mark; (3) the difference between function key or knobs of operational interfaces and between pairs of physical interfaces or touch interfaces through performance displayed in the reaction speed of keys and knobs during simulation of operational interfaces in the washing machine; (4) to understand satisfaction, learnability and cognition of button interfaces among each interface through competitions of operational interfaces. Finally, with the comparative results between subjective ranking and experimental data, to optimized interface design of a washing machine.
In the previous survey, we discussed three parts with questionnaire, "preferences in user interface", "user experience of washing machine", "functional requirements and preferences of interface of washing machine"; indicated from the results, entire physical interface is more preferred by the subjects, followed by hybrid interface; in the part titled "functional requirements and preferences of interface patterns of washing machine", the subjects preferred to operate touch selection button.
The study also designed and produced physical models with different interfaces for the operation of the subjects, and we observed their forms of operational performance. The results showed that the efficiency of touch keys on the operation interface was significantly better than physical keys, while there was no significant difference between physical knobs and touch knobs; the results displayed from the number of errors behind operation indicated that the number of errors happened with touch keys incorporated by physical knobs showed the lowest, and the number of errors happened with touch key operations also dropped, meaning hybrid interface may allow users to have a relatively smooth operation process.
Two for hybrid interface of a washing machine as follows: (1) Interface design requires to consider a number of different aspects, even though one of them has better performance, it remains corporation among distinctive interfaces to achieve the best; (2) even if interface-based efficiency showed the best in the operation, other aspects remain to improve that designers are still requested to be in cautious carefulness to conform to a user's mental model, facilitating interface design to be more perfect.
