Due to declining physiological condition and lacking of social interactions, these people may need helps from others to improve their satisfaction in everyday life and plan or retirement in the future.
Weblog tools offer the platform for people to express their emotion and exchange their experience by sharing diaries, photos, and film. In addition, through the links among different Blogs, it is easier for participants to find people of similiar experience and interest, and therefore absorb new information through Blogs. However, current Blog tools do not consider the limitation of people at middle age. The complexity of user interfaces hampers their willingness to use such tools.
Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the user interface of Blog tools for middle-age people. First, the author conducted a pilot study on typical hosting sites to elicit functional demands for blogging. The result showed that “video sharing” was the most desirable function. Second, the author designed two experiment web sites for the user interfaces of uploading, sharing, and broadcasting video files, and then compared them with an existing blog, Yam Blog. Furthermore, participants in three groups performed typical tacks during the experiments. After the experiments, one-way analysis of variance ANOVA was used to analyze whether three web sites had significant differences either in the performance of subject or subjective evaluation.
The results are summarized as follows: (1) It is better to upload the file by way of dragging. (2) The broadcasting interfaces should have the function of broadcast prompt in the screen. (3) The pause button and play button should be independent. (4) The timeline control should include forward and backward functions and key frames for pictures of selection. (5) Clicking on the scroll bar is better than the slight movements of dragging for volume controls. (6) The location of the control toolbar should be at the lower part of the screen. (7) Friend list is necessary in the sharing interface. (8) Check box is not necessary if the selection of sharing targets can be activated by clicking on the control area. These results can serve as the guidelines for user interface design.
