In Taiwan, however, the functions of police’s palm-sized computers are still limited to the simple search of citizen’s or vehicle’s registration data. And the studies related to police PDA are still insufficient. Therefore, based on the comparisons of different menu structures and inverted color modes on police PDA, this study aimed to investigate the demands for police service-related functions, set up principles of icon selections on police PDA, and discuss which menu structure and icon inverted color mode would be more favorable to the police. Firstly, field interviews were conducted to induce the demands for duty-required functions. In terms of significance, menu functions on police PDA were sorted out, and the submenu categories of hierarchical menu functions were derived through cluster analysis. As to menu icons, according to icon selection principles, a set of icons most acceptable by the policemen was selected. At last, in the comparison of the subjective cognitions of menu structures and icon inverted color modes, 4 different menu interfaces were designed with system default inverted color and full-area inverted color modes on tree structure menu and cyclic structure menu systems. The police officers in uniform involved in the study conducted practical operation of the PDA in a mid-low illumination environment and filled out a subjective evaluation questionnaire. The rank-based Friedman test on the 4 menu sets showed that the tree structure menu with full-area inverted color icons was most preferred by the officers, and the cyclic structure menu with preset inverted color mode was considered as the most complicated.
